Weapons are meant to damage your enemies and leave you unharmed. But what if instead of doing that, they were total liabilities just as likely to kill their user as anything they're pointed at? Watch this, find out and subscribe to Outside Xbox: http://www.tinyurl.com/SubToOxbox
Take Spelunky's shotgun, for instance. Given that everything in Spelunky is absolutely lethal bar your own trousers, you’d have thought you’d be thankful for a bit of firepower to even the odds. And that shotgun, which can dispatch most enemies in a single blast, is going to look mighty tempting.
The problem is it packs a real kick, flinging your tiny explorer backwards with every shot. Often directly into something either pointy, angry, or both pointy and angry.
Then there's Fallout 3's Fat Man nuke launcher. Based on our understanding of modern nuclear weaponry, you want to be as far away as possible when the intercontinental ballistic missile you’ve just launched goes off.
But in Fallout 3, 50s technology reigns supreme and that’s why the game’s Fat Man launcher is a disaster waiting to happen, taking a plutonium bomb designed to be dropped from an aeroplane and launching it with what is, as far as we can tell, a big elastic band. Good luck getting to minimum safe distance!
At the other end of the tech spectrum, the Killstar is the endpoint of all weapons technology according to Blood Dragon, Far Cry 3's neon love letter to 80s sci-fi action.
This is weapon tech that's evolved beyond the requirement for lo-fi ammunition. It doesn't even need a battery. Instead the Killstar just drains your life force and turns it into a powerful energy ray.
You can't fire the Killstar until you literally drop down dead, sure, but you can blast away until you're very nearly dead, then let one of Sloan's schmuck's finish the job. You just know he'll be going on forever about how he was the one that killed the legendary Rex Power Colt and his superlaser of ultimate power.
