When you look at the wider RPG space, it becomes clear just how far most gaming genres have evolved over the past decade — and how far MMOs have fallen behind. Genres like Souls-likes, survival games, turn-based RPGs, and even anime gacha games have seen massive innovation, while the MMO genre has largely remained stagnant.

MMO Genre Stagnation – About This Topic
If you compare RPG-focused genres over the last ten years, the difference is night and day. Souls-likes, survival RPGs, turn-based RPGs, and anime gacha games have all pushed forward with better graphics, smoother gameplay, improved animations, and entirely new systems that didn’t exist a decade ago.
Across the board, these genres have introduced new progression systems, more spectacle, deeper mechanical complexity, and fresh types of content. As a result, the “top ten” games in these genres constantly change, with new titles regularly pushing older ones out through innovation rather than budget alone.
By contrast, the MMO genre has barely shifted. Many modern MMOs still rely on the same quest structures, progression loops, and systems that were already standard ten or even fifteen years ago. While production values may have improved slightly, the underlying gameplay and design philosophy has remained largely unchanged.
This lack of evolution has led to a genre where the top MMOs rarely change, not because they are unbeatable, but because newer games struggle to meaningfully differentiate themselves. Until MMOs begin adopting the same willingness to experiment seen in other RPG genres, the gap between what players expect and what MMOs deliver will continue to grow.
