The Empire attacks its own planet for... reasons, most likely a pathetic attempt by the pro-terrorist writers to discredit Empire apologists in Star Wars Battlefront 2.

Operation Cinder is supposed to be a "show of strength" from the Empire, but that's the most ridiculous thing imaginable. That's like the USA nuking New York as a "show of strength" to the Afghan Emirate. Pure cringe.

Perhaps next they'll make a WW2 game where the RAF bombs London as a show of strength to Germany.
