Destiny: Rise of Iron is a major expansion for Bungie's first-person shooter, Destiny. The expansion was released on September 20, 2016, as the fourth expansion of Destiny. It revolves around the Fallen enemy race, as they have breached the Wall that surrounds Earth's last safe city. Lord Saladin, the last remaining Iron Lord, guides players to become the new generation of the Iron Lords. Rise of Iron adds content across the game, including a new campaign, new missions, new Player versus Environment (PvE) locations, new Player versus Player (PvP) maps, a new PvP game mode, player gear, weaponry, a new social space, and a new raid.

Unlike the base game and the previous three expansions, which were all available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, Rise of Iron is only available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Upon the expansion's release, retailers issued Destiny: The Collection, which includes Destiny (base game), Rise of Iron, and the previous three expansions, The Dark Below, House of Wolves, and The Taken King.

The Fallen, one of five enemy races in Destiny, have breached the Wall that surrounds the Cosmodrone in Old Russia. They have acquired the SIVA virus, a Golden Age breakthrough in self assembling nano technology, giving them an arsenal of new weapons and tech not previously seen, creating a new faction of Fallen called the Devil Splicers. Lord Saladin, the last remaining Iron Lord, leads players as they discover the past of the Iron Lords, reclaim Felwinter's Peak, and stop the evil that the Iron Lords had originally sealed away. Players set out to become the new generation of the Iron Lords.

Destiny is an action role-playing first-person shooter video game in a mythic science fiction open world setting. It is developed by Bungie and published by Activision. The game is available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One video game consoles.

Destiny is set in the 28th century in a post-apocalyptic setting. Humans had spread and colonized the Solar System with the help of a spherical entity known simply as "the Traveler" who reshaped planets and moons, and taught humanity new technologies and mystical powers that led to a time later called the Golden Age. An event known as "The Collapse", an attack from the Darkness, an unknown faction or entity, saw the dissolution of these colonies and left mankind on the brink of extinction. The only known survivors of the Collapse are those living on Earth, who were saved by the Traveler. The Traveler hovers above the last remaining human city as a large spherical body, and its presence gives the Guardians of the City—the last defenders of the human race—the ability to wield an unknown power. Upon mankind's first attempt to repopulate and reconstruct after the Collapse, it was discovered that hostile alien races have occupied mankind's former colonies and civilizations. The player takes on the role of a Guardian of the City, and is tasked with investigating and destroying these threats before the remnants of humanity are completely wiped out.
