Show of the Week examines The Evil Within, a strong survival horror revival from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, then offers up Mike and Jane to one of its most terrifying bosses, in whom Jane's two greatest fears (spiders, that girl from The Ring) are united.
It is a good time to be a horror game aficionado on Xbox, with Alien: Isolation, Slender: The Arrival and Outlast supplying excellent first-person scares, and with P.T. bringing additional chills for those players on PS4. If you have a taste for old-fashioned third-person survival horror in the mould of Resident Evil 4, though, The Evil Within might be right up your spooky street.
The Evil Within casts you as Sebastian Castellanos, a Krimson City cop who answers an emergency call at a creepy gothic mental asylum to find all of the staff dead. Understandably put out, Sebastian is then knocked unconscious and wakes in a nightmarish world full of barbed wire zombies and deadly traps which, if anything, makes things worse.
The icing on the grisly cake is the collection of relentlessly scary boss monsters who torment Sebastian throughout The Evil Within. One of the most striking is the spider woman, a strong contender for the Worst Thing We Had to Fight in a Game 2014 award.
