Sunset Overdrive is the punky platform-action-shooter for Xbox One by Insomniac Games, the studio behind popular PlayStation franchises Ratchet & Clank and Resistance. Andy pokes around in this anarchic "Tony Hawk with guns" and gets the good word from Insomniac community man James Stevenson.
In the video above, Insomniac Games community lead James Stevenson talks up Sunset Overdrive's "self-aware" sense of humour, with which it puts a wrecking ball through the fourth wall. "We know this is a videogame, we embrace the fact that it's a videogame," he says. "If you like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, that same sort of thing happens in our game too."
In fact, Sunset Overdrive is as much Saints Row as it is Scott Pilgrim when it mocks videogame tropes, and it has the same devil-may-care approach to character dress-up (there are no gender normative restrictions here on who wears the skirts and who gets the luxuriant facial hair).
But being stylish and funny will only get you so far, or so we have heard, and Sunset Overdrive needs to nail its attempted mix of grindy traversal and shooting to make it worthwhile.
