Where Winds Meet has recently released globally and is a free to play AAA quality Wuxia RPG that’s been received incredibly well so far in its steam reviews, look at these player numbers one week after launch, the game’s actually been gaining players since release which is something very rare to see as most games see their peak player counts on launch day.
This game is completely free to play with zero pay to win and monetizes itself via cosmetic only gatcha with a battle pass, nothing that affects player power and the game is designed in a way that actually could affect how future MMOs are developed.
You see Where Winds Meet is kinda like GTA5 in that the game offers fully complete single player mode BUT if you choose to you can also switch to the online “MMO Mode” which features multiplayer dungeons, group social activities such as wrestling, guild housing, player marriage, raid bosses, PVP and guild vs guild battles.
The game doesn’t market itself heavily as an MMO even though it has these features primarily because the main focus in development was to deliver a high quality, complete single player RPG experience first.
Has it done that? Yes, it has, some aspects of the game are a bit rough around the edges and when I first played this game back during the beta my biggest critique with it was the UI and difficulty of navigating the games endless menus however this is stuff that can definitely be fixed in the future.
As for the gameplay itself It’s really fun, the combat system, the movement, the animations all feel really good, as you progress you can unlock these insane abilities called “Lightness Skills” that allow you to dash into the sky in true Wuxia fantasy.
The level of detail in the games environments is insane, you can enter every building in the game, you can have typed conversations with NPCs and form relationships with them, I saw article saying that a player convinced an NPC that she was pregnant with his child, you can break your bones and require aid from either an NPC or player doctor, you can go on a GTA style rampage by slaughtering civilians, gain a wanted level, get caught by the guards and end up in Jail if you want to as well as sink your teeth into a highly in depth character customization system.
Outfits come with different dyeable components, mix and match accessories, get special effects, weapon skins, everything you’d want if you’re into dress up simulator.
The game actually has so many features I can’t list them all here but in this video I’ll be jumping into Where Winds Meet and giving you some first impressions on the full global release compared to the last time I played it during the beta
