The very best prequels reveal new details about the events and characters from the original game, ideally without retrospectively tarnishing your love of those originals.

Sometimes these prequels reveal a key bit of backstory, such as Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater showing us the creator of the original Metal Gear, who explains his reasons for giving the plans to American scientist Huey Emmerich.

Sometimes they cover the events right before the start of the original game, such as in PSP game Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7. This prequel elaborates on the events leading to Cloud's amnesia, one of the central mysteries in the original Final Fantasy 7. Its ending runs right into the opening scenes of the 1997 PS1 classic.

Sometimes they even answer burning questions you had about the original game, such as: why aren't there any motorbikes in Grand Theft Auto 3?

According to 2005 prequel Liberty City Stories, it's because of a public ordinance that banned motorbikes from the streets of Liberty City at the turn of the 21st century. So that's why you don't see bikes in 2001's GTA 3; it's definitely not because Rockstar only added them to the series in 2002 in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
