Abaddon is a very strong support hero because he has the ability to swing fights with heals and shields. Your early game should be positioning yourself near your allies in anticipation of turning around gank attempts on those heroes.
Since abaddon has little offensive potential, he is best paired with heroes who can play aggressive and get shielded or healed and do more damage.
To counter this, it's often best to just passively farm in lane and hopefully end up with an underleveled abaddon.
